The Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah 2008 is a phoenix that rose from the atrocities of the 2008 heat wave vintage. Most wines in 2008 were marred by the devastating 20-day-long heat wave where minimum temperatures didn’t go below 38 ˚ C and maximum temperatures elevated above 42 ˚ C.

Enter the low yield ancient Astralis vineyard and this was picked at the very beginning of the heat wave and was spared the heat’s devastating consequence. The result is legendary. Weighing in with 99 points from Wine Advocate, this wine is truly a hedonist’s delight. Earthy forest floor, autumnal underbrush and autumnal notes flow through this multi-layer and decadent example.

While representative of a hot year,  the majestic Astralis vineyard is brimming with perfectly weighted and integrated acidity that continues to keep this wine fresh and alive. At 15 years of age the Astralis cuvee appears extremely ‘old world’ in its disposition and you would be hard to pick this as Australian. Layer with earth, chocolate, flowers, coco powder, black olive, black tea, mahogany, leather boots and caramel macaron-like silky palate.

This a mature example that will continue to develop and should see a plateau of development in another 15 years that will extend for another 20 years. Lots of life ahead for this already stunning cellar mature example.

Buying At Auction?

Your Questions, Answered

What do you need from me to get started?

We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.

How many wines are in each Lot?

You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.

Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?

All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.

How much is the Buyers' Commission?

We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.

What are your freight charges?

Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.

Is there a Guarantee on my wine?

Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
