Product Name: Greenock Creek 'Apricot Block' Shiraz 2020 - 750 mL
Description:
The vines were planted by the creek in the 1960s on sandy brown loam with grey clay. The loam and grey clay combination provides the wine with immense density of fruit flavour and velvety, mouth-filling tannins. The fruit profile tends towards mulberries and blueberries with some clay-influenced anise and milk chocolate undertones.
This single-block wine went out of production in 2005 but we brought it back in 2017. In some ways there’s a precariousness to the creek-side site but it’s an evocative spot with history and the capacity to grow a sensational wine with character. We’ve retrellised the vines to better control the canopy and achieve finer balance. We’re happy with the results.
The wine spent 18 months in French wood, first in new oak from A.P. John and then a one-year-old Sylvain barrel.
The 2020 Creek Block presents a complex nose of leafy bramble fruit, plum, sweet liquorice, milk chocolate, earth and tar. From the outset this is a rolling wave of pure Barossa. Excellent integration of fresh mulberries, blueberries, cherries and fruitcake with earth, spice and creamy oak. The fruit cruises on fine, malty, cinnamon-sugar tannins to a long finish with lovely ease.
Discover the exceptional depth and richness of the Greenock Creek 'Block 4' Shiraz 2020, a standout Shiraz that captures the essence of its Barossa Valley heritage. Crafted from grapes meticulously selected from the prestigious Block 4 vineyard, this wine is a testament to the unique terroir of the region.
Tasting Notes: The 2020 vintage presents a robust profile with vibrant layers of blackberry, plum, and cherries, elegantly intertwined with hints of black pepper and vanilla. The finish is long and satisfying, with subtle touches of oak and soft tannins that enhance the complex flavor palette.
Vinification: Each cluster of Shiraz grapes is hand-picked at the peak of ripeness to ensure maximum flavor concentration. Following the harvest, the grapes undergo a precise fermentation process in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels to add structure and complexity to the wine.
Awards and Ratings:
- Halliday's Wine Companion Dave Brookes - 96 Points "Hand harvested fruit from 80-year-old dry-grown vines on the estate vineyard in Seppeltsfield. Some serious flexing of the shiraz muscles here with superb fruit intensity and density. Pure and opulent yet showing clarity and a vivid line despite its proportions. Cassis and macerated plums, layered spice, licorice, dark chocolate, and earth. Tight, kinetic tannins and a toothsome finish that shows surprising balance for the level of horsepower within. Impressive stuff."
- Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate: 94 points "The 2020 Greenock Creek 'Block 4' Shiraz showcases a remarkable balance of intensity and elegance. This vintage offers a full-bodied experience with a rich tapestry of dark fruits and spices that linger impressively in the mouth."
- James Suckling: 92 points "A true expression of Barossa Shiraz, the Greenock Creek 'Block 4' delivers a powerful yet smooth drinking experience. Ideal for those who appreciate a Shiraz with bold flavors and a harmonious finish."
Food Pairing: This Shiraz pairs wonderfully with rich dishes such as braised lamb shanks, hearty beef stew, or a char-grilled ribeye steak. It also complements a cheese platter featuring aged cheddar and gorgonzola.
Cellar Potential: While the Greenock Creek 'Block 4' Shiraz 2020 is already expressive and delightful to drink, it has the potential to evolve beautifully over the next decade. Collectors and connoisseurs will find that its complexity deepens with time in the cellar.
