Wild Duck Creek 'Duck Muck' Shiraz 2021 is a bold and highly sought-after wine from Heathcote, Victoria, known for its intense power and concentration. Wild Duck Creek Estate, founded by David Anderson, has earned a cult following for producing deeply flavoured, robust Shiraz wines that reflect the unique terroir of Heathcote’s rich, red Cambrian soils. 'Duck Muck' is the estate's flagship Shiraz, produced only in exceptional vintages and in limited quantities. The 2021 vintage continues this legacy, showcasing incredible depth, richness, and complexity while retaining a sense of balance and elegance.
Appearance: Deep, almost inky purple with a dense, opaque core, highlighting the wine’s concentration and intensity.
Aroma: The nose is rich and expressive, dominated by ripe blackberries, dark plums, and black cherries. There are underlying notes of liquorice, dark chocolate, and sweet spices such as vanilla and cinnamon, with a hint of smoky oak and earthy undertones, adding complexity.
Taste: Full-bodied and powerful, the palate bursts with intense flavours of blackberry, blueberry compote, and ripe plum. The wine's velvety tannins provide a luxurious mouthfeel, while subtle hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, and black pepper contribute layers of depth. The oak influence is seamlessly integrated, adding vanilla and toast without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Long and opulent, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and a savoury, smoky finish that stays with you. The wine's balance of power and elegance promises great ageing potential.
Food Pairings: This rich, concentrated Shiraz pairs beautifully with slow-cooked meats like braised beef short ribs or barbecued lamb, where the wine’s bold flavours complement the depth of the dishes. It also works wonderfully with aged blue cheeses or a charcuterie board, where the wine's intensity can stand up to strong, savoury flavours.
96 Points Robert Parker
In 1994, more by accident than design, the series of Duck Muck began. The process, initiated by David McKee and Duck (David Anderson) created a voluminous, rich and balanced red wine. Only being made during exceptional vintages. This is the 9th edition (1994, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2013, 2015, 2017 & 2021).
It combines both the grandiosity of super riper Shiraz with tenacious tannins from the essence of their oldest vineyard. A succulent wine with full palate length, tannins, colour, high alcohol and natural acidity, all in perfect harmony.
