- James Halliday - 96 Points:
"The Westlake Vineyards at Moppa on the northern tip of the Barossa Valley's western edge are fondly referred to as our Third Estate. The undulating landscape rich with ancient stone and red/ brown loams mirrors the incredible diversity of our other vineyard estates at Marananga and Seppeltsfield. These three estates form the foundation of our winemaking masterplan. Sourced entirely from the Hill Block that sits immediately above Blocks 2, 3 and 4 that are the source of our Jaensch Block Shiraz. The vines are planted in shallow topsoils that lie over a bed of ancient ironstone. The exposed site submits the vines to the elements, reducing yields, bunch and berry size to produce fruit of intense flavour, dark colour and solid structure. Grafted onto Viognier rootstock, Shiraz from this block displays rose petal perfume and cherry notes on the nose, and a viscous palate of sweet morello cherries with undertones of dark chocolate and vanilla. A dark mineral finish to the wine gives structure and length to the palate." - Greenock Creek
Pairings: Ideal with rich dishes such as braised beef, hearty stews, or a charcuterie board featuring aged cheeses and smoked meats. This Shiraz also pairs beautifully with a quiet evening and good company.
