Chateau Pavie Macquin, St. Émilion, Grand Cru Classé 2005 is a renowned wine from the Bordeaux region of France, specifically from the Saint-Émilion appellation. Here’s a detailed overview:
Background
- Region: Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France.
- Classification: Grand Cru Classé (classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B in 2006, one year after the 2005 vintage).
- Vineyard: Château Pavie Macquin is a 15-hectare vineyard located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, benefiting from exceptional terroir and optimal sun exposure.
Blend Composition
- Typically a blend dominated by Merlot (70-85%), with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 vintage leans heavily on Merlot, showcasing the varietal's lush, opulent character.
2005 Vintage
- Vintage Conditions: 2005 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux, marked by a long, warm, and dry growing season. Ideal conditions led to perfectly ripe grapes with concentrated flavors, balanced acidity, and ripe tannins.
- Alcohol: Around 14%-14.5%, reflecting the ripeness of the fruit in this vintage.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, opaque ruby with a garnet rim, showing its age gracefully.
- Nose: Aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, plum, violets, and licorice, with secondary notes of leather, tobacco, cedar, and a hint of graphite.
- Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured, with flavors of dark fruits, chocolate, and spice. Silky tannins provide structure and finesse, while the balanced acidity ensures vibrancy. The finish is long and complex, with lingering notes of minerality and dried herbs.
Ageing Potential
- The 2005 vintage is built for long-term aging, with peak drinking typically between 15-25 years from vintage. It can still evolve further but is likely at or near its prime now, offering a stunning example of mature Bordeaux.
Food Pairing
- Pairs beautifully with:
- Roast lamb or beef.
- Game meats like venison or duck.
- Aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego.
Critic Reviews
- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Frequently scores this wine highly for its richness, purity, and expression of terroir.
- Wine Spectator: Praises its balance of power and elegance.
This vintage is a collector's gem, offering a quintessential example of the excellence of Saint-Émilion wines and the exceptional 2005 Bordeaux vintage.
