Château Brane-Cantenac - 2ème Cru Classé 2018
Overview
Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the most respected estates in Margaux, the prestigious appellation within Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Known for its elegance, finesse, and consistent quality, Château Brane-Cantenac has earned its position as a 2ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The 2018 vintage continues this tradition, showcasing the estate's meticulous craftsmanship and the exceptional potential of Margaux wines.
The Estate
Château Brane-Cantenac, situated on the gravelly hillsides of the Margaux commune, has a long history dating back to the 18th century. Today, it is under the ownership of the Lurton family, with Henri Lurton leading the estate. The château’s vineyards are blessed with ideal conditions, benefitting from the perfect balance of sun, wind, and terroir, which results in wines that combine aromatic complexity with structured elegance.
Terroir and Vineyards
The estate spans 75 hectares of vineyards with a unique mix of gravel, clay, and limestone soils. These soils, combined with a temperate climate, allow for the cultivation of the highest quality Bordeaux grape varieties.
Grape Composition (2018 Blend):
- Cabernet Sauvignon: ~60%
- Merlot: ~35%
- Cabernet Franc: ~5%
The blend highlights the estate’s focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides structure and aging potential, with Merlot contributing richness and softness.
The 2018 Vintage
The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by a hot and dry growing season, with a perfect balance of warmth during the summer and cooler nights to preserve acidity. The resulting wines from this vintage are highly concentrated, with intense fruit flavors, structured tannins, and superb aging potential. The 2018 Château Brane-Cantenac is a fine example of this exceptional year, offering power, elegance, and freshness.

- Palate: Full-bodied and rich, with velvety tannins and layers of dark fruit, chocolate, and herbs. The wine has remarkable balance, with refreshing acidity and a beautiful structure that promises long-term aging.
- Finish: A long, lingering finish with fine-grained tannins, fruit, and a hint of minerality.
Ageing Potential
The 2018 Château Brane-Cantenac is a wine of great longevity, built to age gracefully for two to three decades or more. The wine’s concentration, tannin structure, and acidity make it an excellent candidate for extended cellaring, allowing it to evolve and develop new layers of complexity.
