Introduction:
Experience the excellence of Bordeaux with the 2020 Château Phélan Ségur, a testament to the vineyard's dedication to quality and expression. This vintage is the first to include four grape varieties, featuring the introduction of Petit Verdot, which adds depth and complexity to the wine's profile.
Harvest & Climate:
The 2020 harvest, conducted from September 16 to October 1, benefited from ideal climatic conditions. Following a very mild spring with record rainfall, refreshing rains in late August rejuvenated the vineyard, culminating in optimal conditions for the polyphenolic ripeness of grapes—cool nights, drying winds, and hot, sunny days.
Vinification:
A precise blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes are handpicked and undergo meticulous vinification to ensure the aromatic purity and balanced expression of both terroir and varietal characteristics. Aged in French oak barrels, this wine achieves an exceptional balance of fruit and oak.
Tasting Notes:
The 2020 vintage offers an expressive nose of remarkable freshness, diving into a "multicoloured and polyphonic" world of fruit and flowers. The palate is subtly fleshy, dense with finely woven tannins, and radiates with energy. Expect a palate of dark fruits like blackberry and plums, interwoven with cedar, tobacco, and floral hints, leading to a polished, lengthy finish.
Expert Reviews:
- James Suckling: 95 points - "An impressively structured wine that balances intensity with refinement. The integration of oak and tannins is seamless, offering a silky yet weighty texture."
- Decanter: 93 points - "Exhibits a classic structure with layers of complexity. A compelling blend of tradition and modernity."
Cellaring Potential:
While approachable now, the 2020 Château Phélan Ségur holds the potential to evolve gracefully over the next two decades.
Pairing Suggestions:
Ideal with robust dishes such as grilled steak, roast lamb, or hearty stews, and perfect with mature cheeses for a sublime gastronomic experience.

Buying At Auction?
Your Questions, Answered
What do you need from me to get started?
We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.
How many wines are in each Lot?
You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.
Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?
All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.
How much is the Buyers' Commission?
We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.
What are your freight charges?
Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.
Is there a Guarantee on my wine?
Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
